Affordable Housing
Low
to moderate income housing, if more readily available in Norwalk, would decrease
the need for long-distance travel by automobile for those people working in
Norwalk but currently living in other communities that provide lower rents and
home purchase prices.
The Affordable Housing Task Force, in March of this year, made seven
recommendations for improving the housing situation in Norwalk. (information
obtained from Norwalk Citizen-News article of March 15, 2002)
- increasing public awareness of the need for affordable housing by creating
a regional affordable housing Web site and sponsoring forums and
conferences to educate citizens
- developing a financing resources guide listing all affordable housing
financing programs for buyers and sellers
- promoting affordable housing in mixed-use developments
- encouraging turn-key development
- promoting local, state and federal housing assistance programs
- increasing low income assistance
- promoting home ownership instead of rentals
